Beauty Eludes Me

Once upon a time, or at least that is how this story is supposed to go, I was walking down a street. I was trying to find the Grand Central Station. I decided to ask for directions, and that is when I saw her. She was a beautiful woman with the softest afterglow skin. Her eyes are emerald as when the sun hits the ocean. Luscious, straight, yet curly dark red hair that reminded me of licorice. “Hello, you there?;” she said to me as it was evident to her I was in awe. Despite my sudden predicament, she had a joyful, welcoming smile. I am not sure what I said next as she burst into laughter. She was not laughing at me, mind you. Whatever I said had her giggle hysterically for several seconds. “Oh, that’s the way, you go down here, make a turn there, then it should be there,” I’m sure she said that, but anyway…

As I walked away from her, I began biting my lip and thought man, that girl is fine! I turned around to ask if she wanted to get some coffee at a place I knew right around the corner. Just like that, she was gone! I did not even ask her name. Gone, but her face and voice still echo in my head. In the days since I walked that same path in hopes our paths intertwined again. I even drank coffee around the corner from where I saw her last, hoping for a chance encounter.

How I hoped our eyes would lock on each other again. We exchange a nod and a smile as I take her hand, and she takes mine. Lost in endless conversation while the world has stopped around us. I fear this is all but a dream for a foolish heart. Nevertheless, here I sit, waiting for that day. Will it ever come? My foolish heart.
